The Proof of Concept (PoC) project NEURO-MAG aims to develop a new type of magnetic memory device with outstanding energy efficiency and unique data protection characteristics (i.e., with anti-hacking and anti-counterfeiting properties), able to be integrated in two types of applications: (i) smart cards (to secure data in e.g. credit or ID cards), (ii) USB memory sticks (as security locks to protect access to the data stored in a computer or server).
The device is based on the combined use of neuromorphic designs, that emulate the operation principle of biological synapses, and magneto-ionics (i.e., voltage-induced ion migration in magnetic materials). Thanks to its neuromorphic features, the device is able to selectively hide and retrieve portions of information at will, with suitably engineered applied voltage pulses. The activities planned in NEURO-MAG include: prototyping, industrial scalability, demonstration, product validation, market analysis, management of intellectual property rights, assessment of commercial feasibility and business development.
